Sam Strangeways forLaura Farge-Lowe remembers being pushed around the warehouse of Island Trading in a trolley by Sam DeSilva, who began working at her mother’s store when he was a teenager and she was a child. Farge-Lowe now owns and runs the Reid Street store, and Mr DeSilva is Island Trading’s longest-serving employee, with nearly three decades of service.
That shared history is indicative of a family business with serious staying power—Island Trading celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2023—and a recent exchange between the two surely illustrates why clients keep coming back. Farge-Lowe found some chairs at the back of the showroom and asked Mr DeSilva about them; he said he was planning to fix them for a customer.
“She had bought them from us over 25 years ago,” laughs Farge-Lowe. “We’re in the customer service business!
“I see our team get so excited when we deliver our gold standard to a customer: help them, find something that enhances their lifestyle, be it on their porch, their living room, on the bike.”
“I always say I think they’re one of the best teams in Bermuda, if not the best.”
